Leos
by Brian McGuigan

mother hates her only friend
says she doesn’t have a pot
to piss in
or a window
to throw it out of
but wants to hit indian casinos
on weekends
and has played lotto
in almost every state

her friend waitressed at dennys
until she quit
after a fight with the boss
something about not taking any tables
because she was off in a half hour
something like that

I don’t know
I tune mother out
once I hear
pot
piss
window

she says it every time

but still they are friends
go to museums
garage sales
drink ovaltine

then she calls me
to complain

so I say
why bother with her
and she’ll go on
and on
about how they’ve been friends
for ages
and were born a day apart
in the same year
although they didn’t know each other then

before pots
piss
and windows
