Jello
by Jill Mullins

Commercial flash: Bill Cosby narrates to an image
of a new boy moving into the neighborhood
“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
Little Suzy makes him Jello, walks to the street
into a heard of girls bringing the new boy Jello
“Looks like it’s not a secret”

J-E-L-L-O

Fuck that elusive, iridescent, squirmy shit
Coming in different flavors, colors, and shapes
It may look and smell different,
But it’s all made up of the same old powder shit
That liquefies with boiling water
And solidifies with time
To form a colorful transparency of barely solid slime
Slime that is forced down my throat with a pill of
compulsory heterosexuality ground up in the gelatin
A recipe to make me wiggle, make me jiggle, and all
that passive positively sexist shit designed to teach
me to want a man and spend my life trying to get him
And I better start early because if I don’t I may miss my
chance as he’s devoured by all the other girls who’ve
been spoon fed for the same diet of competition, jealousy,
and insecurity
Well fuck those cookie cutter definitions
My life won’t be shaped like that
I refuse the poison no matter how sweet it tastes or
how smooth and easy it is
I’ll take that boiling water and use it to melt away
he barriers to the dreams and futures I chose.

Jill embodies the quote, “If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention” and says, if I’m not writing I’d implode.
