Help Wanted

Sunday’s rumpled classified ads
pale beneath the smooth, colorful scraps
that remain of the grocery coupons.

Last week I applied for three jobs
and saved thirty and fifty cents
on soup and cereal respectively.

Over his green bowtie, the checker
half-smiled and looked unconcerned
with where I see myself in five years.

Amanda teaches English composition at 7:30 in the morning at a community college, goes home and rests, and then hurries to a public library and works at the circulation desk until 9:00 in the evening.
